Senate Revives Push for Higher Uber, Lyft Fees

The Senate revived its push to increase fees on ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft in its fiscal year 2022 budget bill, and with roadway congestion starting to return in force, transportation reform activists are hopeful the House will join their colleagues from across the hall.
With a 27-2 standing vote on Tuesday, senators approved a budget amendment (No. 23) from Transportation Committee Co-chair Sen. Joseph Boncore that would increase the per-trip fee for transportation network companies, or TNCs, and reform how the state collects data from the widely popular platforms. ....

Making all MBTA buses free of fares to riders could have “unintended consequences” on the RIDE paratransit service and carry a price tag stretching close to or above $100 million, T General Manager Steve Poftak said Monday.
Poftak did not explicitly oppose the free bus proposal from Transportation Committee Co-chair Sen. Joseph Boncore, but he said not charging riders on those platforms “may not have the desired effect that some of the advocates believe it will.” ....
