Bengal polls: PM Modi to visit Matua shrine in Bangladesh

KOLKATA: Bangladesh has a role to play in the high octane Bengal polls.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the neighbouring country and likely to offer respect at the shrine of Harichand Thakur, the founder of the Matua sect, at Orakandi in Gopalganj district on March 27, the day when the state goes to the first of the eight-phase elections.
Modi’s move is said to be a smart one ahead of the Assembly elections to woo the Matua electorates, who are a deciding factor in at least 35 seats in the north and south Bengal.
However, it is yet to be decided whether BJP MP from Bongaon Shantanu Thakur, who is a representative of Matuas, will accompany Modi. ....

KOLKATA: Challenging the BJP’s poll plank of citizenship for Matuas, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday addressed a rally in Nadia’s Ranaghat one of her erstwhile citadels comprising more than 40 per cent of Matua electorates who turned to be vote-bank of the saffron party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Aiming to woo the support of the Matua community, the CM asked: They (the BJP) hoodwinked the people living in the region. I will not allow the Centre to implement NRC and CAA in Bengal. Why do you need citizenship? You have already become Indian citizens. ....

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is scheduled to make a two-day visit to West Bengal on December 19 will not be visiting Bongaon under North 24 Parganas, which was initially chosen for the Shahâs rally.
According to sources, the schedule of the Union Home Minister has been changed as the saffron camp fears another political clash there. âThere is a furour among the Matua over the CAA. So, to avoid any political clashes ahead of the polls the central leaders have changed the venue. On December 19, Shah is likely to hold a programme at West Midnapore and at Bolpur on the following day. He will be also visiting Vishwa Bharati Vice-Chancellor,â said the sources. ....
