Suburban Business Turns Pesky Pile of Snow Into Contest

The snow stack is nearly ten feet high and still frozen solid.
“It was 80 plus degrees yesterday, and the pile never budged an inch,” said Jim Stepp, who co-owns Advanced Auto and Truck repairs across the street.
For years, he and partner, Rod Knesper, have turned the steadfast stack’s persistence into a contest, which remains open from Jan. 1 to April 15.
This year, there is no entry fee. Whoever guesses the closet melt date wins $100 cash and a $500 donation to their charity of choice, donated by the auto shop.
“My guess this year is July 14,” said Stepp.
The snow bank is the highest it’s ever been, according to the pair. It’s positioned next to a parking garage and shaded from the sun. In 2020, the snowbank stuck around until mid-June. ....

Bobcats Making a Comeback In Will County

“The fact that we now have bobcat observations means something is going well,” said Blankenship. “The mother and kittens hung out at the same site for two weeks.”
Blankenship says this is the first time bobcats have been spotted in these locations, a signal that habitat preservation and restoration is working.
In the 1990s, habitat loss and overharvesting led to dwindling numbers of the elusive cats until efforts to save the species helped reverse course.
Today, Will County officials estimate around 5,000 bobcats exist in Illinois, although sightings are incredible infrequent, especially in northeastern Illinois.
The night-vision cameras, placed on select trees in the nature preserve, are motion activated. When triggered, the cameras take a burst of three photos at a time, day and night. ....

A five-year-old girl in Colorado was playing in her backyard when she suddenly ran inside to tell her parents that she had just won a staring contest with a big cat.
Her parents, proud of their staring contest-winning daughter, wanted to hear more about it especially since they don t own a cat. She told them the big cat ran into the yard and stared at her. So she shot some great big stares back at the cat until it ran away. The parents were curious to see what happened, so they reviewed their security camera footage and were shocked to see that the cat in the stare-down was actually a large bobcat. A video has gone viral of a man named Happy rescuing his wife from a RABID BOBCAT attack in their North Carolina
. They re about to get into the car when she starts screaming . . . and then Happy springs into action.
He grabs the bobcat and hurls it across the yard. The cat recovers and runs back under the car. They were both bitten, and had to get 30 rabies shots.
