Swiftwolfe gets 8 years for crime spree from Onion Lake, Lloydminster to North Battleford


North Battleford Crown prosecutor Oryn Holm told the court that on Jan. 31, 2021, Swiftwolfe and another man shot the door before kicking it open during a home invasion on Onion Lake Cree Nation. Swiftwolfe pointed a shotgun at one of the residents. The man was on the ground and while Swiftwolfe and his co-accused assaulted the man his co-accused said, “Where’s my money?”
The man being assaulted was a hunter and recognized that the gun was a 410 shotgun, said Holm.
When Onion Lake RCMP arrived they saw a hole in the back door from the shotgun blast and found blood in the house. At the time, Swiftwolfe was on a firearms prohibition. ....

Lawyers for accused killers Vega Bear and Branden Dillon ask for more adjournments


Lawyer Brian Pfefferle, who represents Bear, told the court that he is in discussions with the Crown, adding that, “further disclosure is forthcoming.”
Pfefferle said he has sufficient disclosure to enter an election how Bear wants to be tried but requested a one-month adjournment.
Likewise, lawyer Kathy Hodgson-Smith, who represents Dillon, said she has received disclosure, is reviewing it and needs one more adjournment.
Disclosure consists of the Crown’s case against the accused and usually includes search warrants, the charging document, details of the offence, audio/video and transcribed witness statements, statements from the accused, expert reports, exhibits, private communication intercept authorizations, evidence, and criminal records of witnesses and the accused. ....

BATTLEFORD Nicolas Buck struggled to get the words out as he apologized to the family of Mark Douglas Jonson.
“I’m not apologizing because I have to, I’m apologizing because I’m sincerely …” Buck said in a televised appearance at Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench as he fought to get more words out, many of which were inaudible between his cries.

Prosecutor asks for special court sitting for trial of alleged gang member


“There’s quite a bit of moving parts,” he said adding there will be 14 witnesses.
Holm said the Crown is proceeding by way of indictment, the more serious offence. He also said the Crown continues to be opposed to Chief’s release.
Chief and four others were arrested Jan. 1, 2021, after allegedly shooting at the RCMP pursuing them on Onion Lake Cree Nation.
RCMP were pursuing an SUV on Chief Taylor Road when one of the occupants allegedly pointed a rifle out a window and started shooting at the police.
Police continued to pursue the SUV, which eventually stopped in front of the high school on Onion Lake.  The driver, Tyler Ryan Wolfe, 35, and a front passenger got out of the SUV and fled. Police soon found Wolfe hiding inside a garbage bin and the passenger was found in a nearby baseball field. Chief, Twaine Derek Buffalo-Naistus, 39, Danny Lee Weeseekase, 38, and Melissa Lee McAlpine, 32, were arrested and charged with numerous offences. ....
