CALUMET The Keweenaw Peninsula was voted the top vacation destination in Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula by MLive on Tuesday. The online poll, which ran
last week, included destinations like Marquette, Porcupine Mountains State Park, and Ironwood. Factoring in other areas of the peninsula thaw were in the poll, like Copper Harbor, the Keweenaw Peninsula received about 75% of the votes.
“Obviously, we’re really proud of earning this recognition,” said Brad Barnett, executive director of the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The Keweenaw is an incredible destination, and in a lot of ways, it’s still a bit of a secret for a lot of people, even in Michigan.” ....

Stunning outdoor beauty and a rich mining history made the Keweenaw Peninsula an award–winning place to visit.
MLive named the area a top vacation destination in the Western UP.
Other destinations in the poll included Marquette, Porcupine Mountains State Park and Ironwood.
The Keweenaw Peninsula received 35% of the vote in the poll. ....

The U.P. Town of Nonesuch may no longer exist, but the mine sure does.
The mine lies in ruins in the deep Upper Peninsula woods of Ontonagon County. The mine produced copper from 1867-1912, but only made a profit from 1879-1881.
As for the actual town of Nonesuch, it was settled in 1866, acquiring its own post office in 1876. Logging and mining were their sources of income until the post office closed in 1887. The mine then chugged along, opening & closing at least five times before it shut down for good in 1912. ....
