Three Portuguese border police officers sentenced for beating Ukrainian migrant to death

Three Portuguese border police officers have been handed prison sentences for beating a Ukrainian migrant to death.
A Lisbon court found that the inspectors kicked and beat the handcuffed Ihor Homeniuk with batons, breaking his ribs and causing death by asphyxiation. It happened on March 12, 2020, in the temporary reception centre at Lisbon airport.
He had arrived in Portugal by plane two days earlier from Turkey without a valid visa, in search of work.
Homeniuk was immediately detained by immigration authorities for deportation after refusing to board a flight out of the country.
On Monday, three police officials were sentenced to between seven and nine years in prison over the 40-year-old man s death. ....

Brazilians led in residence permits granted by Portugal in 2020

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - In 2020, Brazilians once again topped the list of applicants granted authorization to live in the country by the Portuguese government. Preliminary data provided by the Portuguese Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) show that, of 117,500 new residence permits issued last year, 41,990 were granted to Brazilians.
In second place, with 13,160 applications - are citizens of the United Kingdom, which officially left the European Union in January 2020. Next are Indians, with 7,017 requests, Angolans, with 4,820, and Italians, with 4,480.
