Porto Summit must centre the EU as a social project

The upcoming Social Summit in Porto must deliver on concrete commitments to strengthen rights and improve living conditions. The pandemic has exposed the gradual weakening of social rights across the EU, jumpstarted by the 2008 economic crisis.
The Commission and member states drove aggressive austerity cuts that damaged social services and weakened social safety nets for citizens. The near collapse of our health systems, the scarcity in medical supplies and the role played by frontline workers during the pandemic, among the most poorly paid and precarious, are stark examples of the disastrous consequences of these policies.
The EU failed to meet its 2020 poverty reduction target and has enabled massive inequality with policies centring private interests, neoliberalism and the profits of multinationals over fundamental rights, in particular the social rights, of its citizens. ....

Homelessness is rising in the EU but it is not insurmountable, if European leaders, national governments, local authorities and all stakeholders work together. This is why, with the support of Europe’s biggest cities, over 120 MEPs, Europe’s regions and the main social NGOs, we are calling for the setting of an EU goal to end homelessness at the Porto social summit.

EU leaders urged to commit to ending homelessness by 2030 at Porto Social summit

More than a hundred European personalities urged several European leaders in an open letter published Friday to commit to ending homelessness in the EU by 2030 when they meet at the Porto Social Summit which is set to take place on 7 May.
The letter’s signatories, which include MEPs, mayors, NGOs and Committee of the Regions members, described homelessness as “an extreme form of poverty” and a “violation of human rights” that cannot be “tolerated” or “ignored” in the EU.
Among the Portuguese presidency’s main priorities is the approval of the European Pillar of Social Rights’s action plan presented by the European Commission in March. ....
