Call for business rescue at Denel

defenceWeb
Written by defenceWeb -
Denel corporate office entrance.
Put Denel under business rescue is one proposal this week to find a way of bringing some stability to the beleaguered State-owned defence conglomerate with another a call for it to diversify to remain operational.
Both calls come from National Assembly members, one the chair of an oversight committee and the other an opposition party member of the same committee – the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises (PCPE). They come in the wake of disclosures this week of short and possible non-payment of salaries again at Denel divisions.
The diversification call was made by PCPE chair Khayalethu Magaxa and reported by SABC TV News.

NPA must appeal Judge Hlophe's decision in Bongani Bo...

Bongani Bongo, who was the minister of state security in the dying days of the Zuma administration, was charged with a series of contraventions of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PCCA), on the basis that he offered a gratification in the form of an offer or a suggestion to advocate Ntuthuzelo Vanara, Senior Legal Adviser to Parliament, which offer was allegedly aimed to derail or interfere with a parliamentary inquiry into Eskom.
Let us leave aside the controversy that continues to brew about the presiding judge, John Hlophe’s decision to hear the case, and undertake a detailed analysis of the judgment. It holds grave implications for the judiciary as well as the future of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the response of the law to the whole issue of State Capture.

The Accused in this matter, Advocate Bongani Bongo (Mr Bongo) was a member of the National Assembly from 07 May 2014 to 16 October 2017. He was a member of the executive branch of government, having served as the Minister of State Security during the period 17 October 2017 to 26 February 2018. Mr Bongo then became a Member of Parliament on 27 February 2018, a position he still presently hold. The allegation levelled against Mr Bongo is that he offered a bribe to Advocate Nthuthuzelo John Vanara (Mr Vanara), the evidence leader of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises: Eskom Inquiry, in order to delay or collapse the Inquiry. Mr Bongo denied those allegations. He stated that he knew Mr Vanara as a lawyer and had engaged him previously and had discussions with him regarding the parallel processes and enquiries. Furthermore, Mr Bongo referred to a sworn statement submitted by him before the Ethics Committee Inquiry against him. In terms of that statement Mr Bongo denied the allegations relating to collapsing the Inquiry/ and or bribing Mr Vanara.

Zondo commission hears why it was a 'challenge' to hold Lynne Brown 'accountable'

The former chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, told the Zondo commission that holding former public enterprises minister Lynne Brown accountable was a challenge because she did not attend meetings.
In paragraph 13 of her affidavit - read out by the evidence leader, advocate Alec Freund, at the commission on Wednesday evening - Letsatsi-Dube said: "I did not experience any push back from Minister Brown, however holding Comrade Lynne Brown accountable was a challenge; she did not attend meetings of the portfolio committee but instead sent her deputy."
When asked to elaborate, she said she pointed out in her affidavit that Brown explained those meetings overlapped with Cabinet meetings.
