The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday 2 January 2021 at 1:38 am local time, at an intermediate to considerable depth of 162 km below the surface. The event was filed by Mexico s National Seismological Service (SSN), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. The tremor was recorded late at night on Saturday 2 January 2021 at 10:26 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 24 km below the surface. The event was filed by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CEIC), the first seismological agency to report it. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 65 km from the epicenter, and Yilan (pop. 94,200) 91 km away.
