Port Clinton Council votes to renew $1.9 million fire levy

The more things change, the more they stay the same for Port Clinton Fire & Rescue.
The department has changed its name, and for the last two years has handled emergency medical services in Port Clinton, as well as the surrounding townships of Catawba, Portage and Bay.
The fire department has also added such high-tech equipment as a mobile stroke unit, and had enhanced its ability to cleanse ambulances and provide special equipment and PPE supplies throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. ....

Cleveland woman arrested after high speed chase in Port Clinton
PORT CLINTON - A Cleveland woman was arrested at gunpoint after a high-speed chase that resulted in multiple collisions with other vehicles near the west end of Port Clinton on Saturday.
Jade L. Petitto, 26, the alleged driver, is facing charges of felonious assault and failure to comply/fleeing and eluding and is being held at the Ottawa County Detention Facility following the incident.
According to a report from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began shortly before 2 p.m. when Sgt. Brandon Amory attempted to stop a black SUV heading east on Ohio 2 for having no visible license plate. ....

Port Clinton moves to put fire levy renewal on ballot

PORT CLINTON - The city of Port Clinton will again be asking local voters to renew the 1.9-mill fire levy in November.
On Tuesday, Port Clinton City Council took one of the first steps toward putting the issue on the ballot for the Nov. 2 general election by passing a resolution declaring its necessity.
The 1.9-mill renewal levy for providing and maintaining fire department services was initially passed in 2016 and was set for a period of five years, making its last year of collection 2021.
The proposed renewal would be for an additional five years at 1.9 mills, which would first be collected in 2022, according to the resolution. ....

With help from her close-knit family and many friends, cheerleader Abbie Zelms will be graduating from Danbury High School this spring with plans for the future.
“It hasn’t been easy for Abbie, or for our family, because she has had to deal with being born with Down syndrome,” said her mother, Jennifer Zelms. “What has been most important for Abbie, as well as for her teachers, had been to make sure everyone believed in her abilities.” ....
