TAMPA There had long been whispers that erased segregation-era Black cemeteries were hidden throughout the Tampa Bay area, but the rumors were not taken seriously, and no one went looking for the burial grounds.
Then, in June 2019, the
Tampa Bay Times published a report questioning if Zion Cemetery was under warehouses, abandoned storefronts and public housing on the 3700 block of N. Florida Ave. in Tampa. ....

Historic marker honors Black cemetery erased during construction of MacDill
Port Tampa Cemetery disappeared when the base was constructed in the late 1930s.
 
 
MacDill Air Force Base on Tuesday dedicated a historic marker denoting the spot where the erased Port Tampa Cemetery was located. [ Paul Guzzo ]
He was stillborn in 1930 during the third trimester.
But the Williams’ granddaughter, Hillsborough Circuit Judge Lisa Campbell, said she has been told that the baby was so loved that there was a funeral.
Death records report he was buried in Port Tampa Cemetery.
“Everyone in any culture expects that you would be able to come see your loved ones” in a cemetery, Campbell said Tuesday on MacDill Air Force Base. “In this case, that didn’t happen and hasn’t happened since 1938, 1939 when the base began to be built.” ....
