Several Nigerian cities including the capital, Abuja, and Lagos were plunged into darkness Wednesday after the national electricity grid collapsed yet again.
Electricity distribution companies announced a breakdown of the grid, the fourth this year, after extended hours of power outage experienced in many parts of the country. In some areas, the outage began on Sunday.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company, based in Lagos, said “Dear valued customer, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the National Grid that’s causing outages across our network. We are working with our TCN partners to restore supply as soon as possible.” ....

The Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, has apologised to Nigerians over the recent erratic power supply in the country, saying no fewer than power generating plants had broken down in the last few weeks
In a statement signed yesterday by his spokesman, Aaron Artimas, the minister said the breakdown of the plants was responsible for the poor power supply situation in the country.
He noted further that seven other thermal plants were battling with low gas shortages but assured that there were ongoing efforts to restore power to the affected areas in the country. ....

HUNDREDS of aggrieved electricity consumers, including civil society organisations took to the streets in Port Harcourt on Wednesday to protest what they termed continued estimated billings by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company.
While asking the power distribution company to leave the state, the protesters under the aegis of Concerned Electricity Consumers in Rivers State, blocked the entrance of the PHEDC head office along Moscow Road, demanding to be addressed by the Managing Director.
The protesters who carried placards bearing inscriptions such as, ‘No to illegal disconnections’, ‘Give us prepaid meters’ , ‘Residents of Ogbogoro rejects N3.6m outrageous demand by PHEDC to supply power to the area’, among others. ....

Millions of electricity consumers across the country lack functional meters, with many groaning under the weight of estimated bills from the distribution companies as they are deprived of the right to be in full control of how much they spend on electricity monthly.
In 2016, when Mr John Ovat was about moving into a new apartment at Rumuagholu Pipeline in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, his landlord, Dr Enang Idongesit, was sick and tired of the estimated bills he was receiving from Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company. ....
