The council s vote also is to create a new Emergency Communications Department. It would be the home for the 911 communications moving out of police control.
The vote would also move out several other police department services: the alarm administration unit to the development services department; human resources to the city s general human resources department; facility maintenance to the city s building services department; public information to the city s communications and public information office; and finance to the city s financial services department. ....

Austin police: Proposal for state control submitted, Abbott says

In an ongoing fight over police funding, the Texas Legislative Council has submitted a draft proposal for a law that would land the Austin Police Department under state control, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a tweet Monday.
Earlier this month, Abbott touched on the possibility of transferring large swaths of the city, including the downtown area and the University of Texas campus, to state policing.
Abbott s spokesman said Monday he had not seen a copy of the proposal and did not know if it would give complete control of the police department to the state or limit the state to the areas of town Abbott had mentioned previously. ....
