[EDITORIAL] The Chauvin Verdict: It's A Start | WMAY | Stay Informed. Stay Connected.

As we awaited the reading of the verdict Tuesday in the trial of former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin, you could practically feel the tension in the air. Until the judge uttered the word, “Guilty,” once for each of the three criminal counts against him, many of us felt like we just couldn’t take the outcome for granted, despite the mountain of direct evidence against him.
But the jury did as prosecutors urged them to do – to believe what they saw with their own eyes and heard with their own ears. What they saw, what they heard, was an officer who believed his badge and the authority that accompanies it gave him absolute power to assert his will, to ignore the desperate final breaths of the man pinned beneath his knee, to disregard the pleas of onlookers to show some mercy to the man in his custody. ....

A Springfield alderman is expecting some pushback… but still plans to proceed with his ordinance to put some more teeth into the Police Community Review Commission.
Alderman Shawn Gregory says his forthcoming ordinance would give the commission subpoena powers to look into allegations of police misconduct. The commission wound not be able to impose binding punishment on any officer but could make recommendations for disciplinary action. Gregory says he expects opposition from the police department and the police union, but says he wants to have policies in place to deal with problematic situations before they arise. ....

Turner To Leave Springfield Council After City Budget Vote, Replacement Process Announced

Newly minted State Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) will continue serving as Springfield alderwoman for the next two weeks as the city council prepares to vote on a city budget later this month.
Turner, who was appointed and sworn in to represent the state’s 48th Senate district on Saturday, sent her letter of resignation from the Springfield City Council late Tuesday. She said she was waiting for guidance from a senate attorney to confirm she can hold both posts at once.
The Illinois Constitution prohibits members of the General Assembly from getting paid as a public officer or employee, such as city council member or firefighter, while they are “in attendance as a member of the General Assembly.” ....

Springfield dreams

Mentoring and meeting needs
Michael Phelon started The Outlet mentoring program in 2004. It s located on South 12th Street, though this year, the 30 mentors are mostly connecting with youth remotely. The program serves 48 youth from in and around Springfield with a focus on boys and young men from fatherless households.
This year, Phelon has seen an enormous amount of personal loss. His mother and uncle died, as did his mentor, Dr. Clarice Ford, and his right-hand man at The Outlet, Marcus Butler Sr. It s been rough for us. Most of the young guys that I work with, they are already coming from hard situations, said Phelon. ....
