Virginia Closes Five Mental Health Institutions to New Patients Amid Crisis in Staffing

A crisis in mental health care is forcing Virginia to stop accepting new patients at five of its eight state institutions because staffing shortages and safety issues are affecting their ability to meet the growing need for care.
The head of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) said in a statement that there are more than 1,500 patient-support staff vacancies across the state.

The result is a dangerous environment where staff and patients are at increasing risk for physical harm, and where effective treatment to help patients recover is much harder to deliver, DBHDS said in a letter to its partners and providers Friday.  ....

WOODBRIDGE, VA – As public outcry for transparency and police reform has continued across the country since the death of George Floyd last summer in Minneapolis, several local police departments across Northern Virginia are collaborating on a multi-agency committee that will investigate incidents involving the use of force by law enforcement.

A group of 11 Northern Virginia police departments said Tuesday it has launched a Critical Incident Response Team to handle the investigations of police shootings, in-custody deaths and officer suicides in one another’s departments, allowing a group of detectives unrelated to the involved department to take an independent look at each case.
But three of the largest law enforcement departments in Northern Virginia the Fairfax County police, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Alexandria police have not joined the response team.
