Officer Under Investigation For 'Extremist' Keychain

Bend, OR – A Bend police officer is under investigation after a keychain he was carrying on duty on Saturday offended someone.
A picture of Bend Police Corporal Josh Spano on duty on May 1 was posted to social media and showed a keychain with the phrase “molon labe” sticking out of the pocket of his tactical vest, The Bulletin reported.
The phrase is Greek for “come and take them.”
It references an exchange the night before the Battle of Thermopylae when Persian King Xerxes ordered the Spartans to hand over their weapons and King Leonidas replied “molon labe.”
It is a popular military slogan used as a motto by the U.S. Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT). ....

The chief of the Bend Police Department said one of its officers is under investigation after displaying a slogan of the gun rights movement while on duty.
Cpl. Joshua Spano was photographed over the weekend donning the Greek phrase “molon labe,” meaning “Come and take [them],” while issuing a citation to a vocal critic of Bend police.
The activist, Mike Satcher, is currently embroiled in a legal battle with Bend over access to police records. Spano cited Satcher on Saturday for criminal trespassing during what the activist describes as a volunteer effort to provide food and showers to unhoused people. After the interaction, members of Satcher’s group, the Central Oregon Peacekeepers, circulated the photo of Spano along with screenshots from his personal social media accounts, which contain imagery often used by far-right groups. ....

BEND, Ore. (AP) A Bend Police Department officer will be investigated for wearing a keychain with a phrase that has been connected to a far-right group while in uniform on Saturday.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz did not identify the employee, though Cpl. Josh Spano is the officer seen in a photograph circulating on social media, The Bulletin reported. Attached to the front of Spano’s service vest is an item reading “molon labe” in Greek lettering, a phrase associated with anti-government militia group Three Percenters.
Spano, 35, told The Bulletin he wears the keychain to honor the oath of enlistment he took when he joined the military, and other soldiers. He also denied being part of the Three Percenters or any anti-government group. ....
