Massachusetts marijuana board eyes improvements in social equity, mentorship

BOSTON While lawmakers in Connecticut and Rhode Island explore ways to legalize adult-use cannabis and also ensure social equity, regulators in Massachusetts are pushing further with their own programs to enable people disadvantaged by previous marijuana laws to benefit from the economic possibilities offered by legalization.
One bill in Connecticut would create a “social equity council,” as well as a “Cannabis Equity and Innovation Account,” which would fund workforce development programs and offer grants with cash from potential cannabis excise tax revenue.
Meanwhile, a bill in Rhode Island would create a “social equity assistance fund” to provide no-interest loans to business owners affected by past cannabis prohibition laws. ....

Massachusetts churches Paycheck Protection Program Roman Catholic Dioceses of Worcester


BOSTON – Massachusetts churches, including Catholic and Christian religious organizations, received upwards of $82 million in forgivable loans through the federal Paycheck Protection Program, according to Small Business Administration data released last month.
The Roman Catholic Dioceses of Worcester, Fall River and Springfield, along with the Archdiocese of Boston, collected over $20 million in PPP loans, distributed among different churches and administrative departments under their jurisdiction. Boston’s Archdiocese, led by Cardinal Sean Patrick O Malley received the most within this group, with over $8 million in PPP aid.
Ray Delisle, director of communications for the Diocese of Worcester, said the PPP loans were necessary to keep people employed in the diocese, while continuing to provide services to the community during these hard times. ....
