Martelle: Amazon loss not the end for unions

Well, it was a valiant effort, that drive to organize workers at an Amazon facility in Bessemer, Ala., which resulted in a defeat even more embarrassing than the vote count suggests.
Nearly 6,000 workers would have been covered by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, but only a little more than half of the eligible workers bothered to vote. Of those who cast ballots, only 738 workers supported the union, 1,000 votes fewer than those who opposed.
Another 500 ballots weren’t counted after being challenged (mostly by management), but even if you add all of those to the “yes” side (highly unlikely), that would mean a maximum of 20% of the workers voted to unionize, and the percentage in reality is probably much lower. ....

Titus Workman, publisher of the Times West Virginian, will retire April 30 after a 46-year career in the newspaper industry.

FAIRMONT — Every career has touchpoints and that is certainly the case for Titus Workman who has worked in the newspaper industry for 46 years.
Workman, publisher of the Times West Virginian, will retire on April 30. Workman said he will carry with him memories of such world-changing events as the Iran hostage situation, the shooting of President Ronald Reagan and 9/11.
I ve enjoyed working for CNHI as well as all of the other newspaper owners I ve worked with, Workman said. I ve also enjoyed working with the staff of the Times West Virginian. This staff has been a delight to work with. ....

Rawalpindi: There will be no shortage of eatables at utility stores during Ramazan said Parliamentary Secretary Anti-Narcotics Force, Shaikh Rashid Shafiq talking to media persons at the launch of ‘Ramazan Relief Package’ in Muslim Town on Saturday.
Utility Stores Corporation (USC) Regional Manager Farasat Anjum, USC Muslim Town Manager Waqar Akbar, Area Manager Syed Zillay Hasnain and several other high-ranking officers were present on the occasion.
Shaikh Rashid Shafiq warned USC staff members of stern action in case of shortage of essential items in stores during Ramazan. “Prime Minister Imran Khan wants to provide maximum relief to the public through ‘Ramazan Relief Package,” he said adding Interior Minister Shaikh Rashid Ahmed will personally monitor all utility stores in the city to provide maximum relief for poor public. ....
