Just over one year since COVID-19’s impacts were first felt across campus, Penn is now offering one of the greatest tools in the fight against the pandemic to members of the University community. A ‘shot’ at ending the pandemic The Penn Cares COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic is offering one of the greatest tools in the fight against the pandemic to faculty, staff, postdocs, and students. Members of the Penn community coming to the Gimble Gymnasium on the first day it opened on April 14. The site was able to vaccinate more than 850 eligible faculty, staff, and postdocs during its first three days of operation before the site opened to students. From PPE to lab safety, supporting the campus community is a full-time job The Environmental Health and Radiation Safety office plays an important role in keeping Penn safe and healthy. Now, during the COVID-19 crisis, the office has stepped up to support the resumption of on-campus activities. As researchers across campus, including postdoc Richard Barrett (above) continue to safely resume on-campus activities, Penn’s Environmental Health and Radiation Safety Office is helping the campus community get back to work safely. Words and phrases like “PPE” and “aerosol transmission” weren’t common parts of the vernacular before the pandemic. Now, these ideas are at the forefront as people adapt their activities and behaviors to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. ....
Project Quaker testing program key to a safe campus reopening Developed in partnership with Penn Medicine, the program aims to conduct 40,000 COVID-19 tests each week and will support ongoing plans to bring students back to campus this spring. A large-scale COVID-19 screening program known as “Project Quaker” is being rolled out across campus. The program relies on saliva-based samples which are processed and analyzed in a newly-established testing facility in Stemmler Hall. A coordinated campus testing plan for COVID-19 that relies on saliva-based tests had its soft launch in early December. The large-scale COVID-19 screening program known as Project Quaker will allow COVID-19 to be tracked and mitigated at Penn and is an essential component for plans to bring students back to campus safely for the spring semester. ....
