KZN launches its first medical orthotics and prosthetics department

KwaZulu-Natals first medical orthotics and prosthetics department has been launched, with the aim of pumping more skills into an embattled sector.
DURBAN - The prosthetics sector has received a boost with the launch of a specialised training facility in Durban as a result of a partnership between Durban University of Technology and the provincial health department.

This is owed, in part, to the severe skills shortage in the sector – there are only 420 registered orthotists and prosthetists in the country.

The Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics Department will ultimately deploy graduates across the province, allowing patients to be assessed and fitted with prostheses in their respective areas, rather than travelling to Durban. ....

Tulane engineering students place first in design competition

When four biomedical engineering students from Tulane University were chosen for an internship at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS) last summer, they were tasked with identifying an unmet clinical need – something that would not only save money for the agency but improve patient care and satisfaction.

They brainstormed multiple ideas, ultimately settling on a project they dubbed “Socket To Me” improving the costly and time-consuming process of manufacturing lower limb prosthetic sockets.
With a grant from the National Institutes of Health, they spent the summer transforming their idea into an actual design a winning design.
At the SLVHCS’s recent Performance Excellence Fair, the team of Kali Dancisak, Carly Harad, Ava Heller and Marjie Williams, won first place out of more than 40 department entries. Gingerbread Drive-Thru Raises Funds for Scottish Rite for Children

The annual Cookies and Castles event benefitting Texas Scottish Rite for Children carried on this year with a twist.
Instead of making gingerbread houses together, people participated in a drive-thru where everything they needed was included in a kit. More than 2,000 gingerbread houses and 6,000 pounds of candy were distributed to families. Santa Claus even surprised kids with a drive-thru photo booth.
Money raised from the event directly benefits the Orthotics and Prosthetics department at Scottish Rite for Children.
