MANILA, PHILIPPINES (19 July 2021) A six-year, pioneering regional technical assistance initiative has boosted the capacity of health systems in Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), and Viet Nam to respond to climate-induced health threats amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced today.
The Strengthening Resilience to Climate Change in the Health Sector in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) project helped the three countries adopt national health adaptation plans to address weather-related health risks, including heat and communicable diseases such as dengue, malaria, heat stress, and diarrhea. ....

BEIJING, PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA (12 May 2021) Different financial instruments to increase disaster resilience in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) were the focus of discussions at a workshop today in Beijing.
The workshop on Enhancing Financial Resilience to Disasters was hosted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), jointly with the Ministry of Finance and National Development and Reform Commission of the PRC on a day that also marks the country’s National Day of Disaster Prevention and Reduction. It brought together experts to disseminate international best practices on disaster risk financing and explore opportunities for innovative operations in the PRC. Participants discussed the case for a possible parametric insurance facility to deal with flood risks, specifically in the Yangtze River basin. ....

Timor-Leste Signs $1 Million ADB Grant for Immediate Flood Relief - Timor-Leste

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (16 April 2021) The Government of Timor-Leste and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $1 million grant agreement to support immediate relief efforts in the aftermath of tropical cyclone Seroja, which caused flooding and landslides in the capital Dili and surrounding low-lying areas.
The grant, financed by the Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund, will support the government’s efforts to restore life-saving services, such as conducting damage assessment to coordinate crisis response and disaster recovery, providing conditional transfers to Dili residents, and rehabilitating basic community infrastructure.
“The cyclone has put enormous pressure on the country amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic,” said ADB’s Country Director for Timor-Leste Sunil Mitra. “ADB will work with development partners to support the government’s disaster relief efforts to help people affected by the floods and mudslides.” ....
