PATTON – Four families combined their COVID-19 stimulus checks to open a distillery, and they’ve worked to use all American-made equipment and ingredients.
“The stimulus money was to stimulate the American economy, and that’s what we want to do,” Excise Distillery partner Nate Wharton said.
Wharton and his family are business partners with Jordan Fees, Nate Bearer and Douglas Ropp, he said.
A grand opening of Excise Distillery is slated from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at the distillery, 1302 Glendale Lake Road, with food, music, fireworks and craft vendors.
Nicktown farmer Rob Yahner supplies grains for the spirits produced by the distillery, Wharton said. Both of the distillery’s stills are American-made, and the labels on each bottle are printed in Patton Borough. It’s been a challenge to secure U.S.-made bottles, Wharton said. But after searching, he found a New York company to provide th ....

Wildfire danger remains high | News, Sports, Jobs

Warmer spring weather might have area residents inclined to have a campfire or barbeque.
But even with recent precipitation, officials say to be cautious, noting that the local fire danger is still high.
“The fire danger is above normal right now, even though we’ve had some precipitation,” said Bob Wetzel, district forester for the Gallitzin State Forest. “We’ve had some rain, but we’re not in the clear yet.”
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the greatest risk of wildfires is in March, April and May because of dry conditions.
Tim Yeager, assistant park manager at Prince Gallitzin State Park in Patton, said fires can progress rapidly in the spring due to windy and dry conditions. ....

Cambria County native new director of Pa. Game Commission Southwest Region

The Pennsylvania Game Commission didn’t have to look far for its new Southwest Region Office director.
Jason D. Farabaugh began his new position last weekend, running the office in Fairfield that oversees a 10-county area.
The Carrolltown, Cambria County, native spent his entire 13 years with the game commission working multiple positions in the agency’s southwest region.
Farabaugh, 46, fills a vacancy created by the retirement of former region Director Thomas Fazi of Ligonier. He said he will be an advocate for both hunters and outdoor enthusiasts.
“I am honored and humbled to be selected as the Southwest Region’s new director and to continue serving Pennsylvanians and protecting our wildlife,” Farabaugh said. ....

On thin ice? | News, Sports, Jobs - Altoona Mirror

Area anglers are strongly advised to use “extreme caution and common sense” when ice fishing, local officials said, because ice thickness varies.
“There’s really no such thing as ‘safe ice, ” said Tim Yeager, assistant park manager at Prince Gallitzin State Park, so those who enjoy ice fishing need to be prepared as well as cautious because ice conditions vary from location to location around the 26 miles of shoreline of Glendale Lake.
An incident Wednesday triggered an alarm for emergency responders after “concerned bystanders” noticed footprints leading from a parked truck going out onto the ice. Further investigation found those who left the tracks were safe and ice fishing out of view on another part of the lake. ....
