Brain training research participants needed for dementia-prevention study
Catherine Hawley reports
TAMPA, Fla. - Millions of Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Doctors say brain disease affects more than one in 9 people over the age of 65.
A multi-year study aims to confirm that brain-training exercises or cognitive training as we get older can stop dementias before they even take hold.
For the last three years, researchers at the University of South Florida have been analyzing the effectiveness of computer games on the brains of older adults.
We are trying to confirm which types of brain games, cognitive training that may be effective at preventing or slowing down cognitive decline or dementia, explained Dr. Jennifer O’Brien, associate professor of psychology at the USF St. Petersburg campus. ....

USF seeks participants in Polk County for dementia-prevention study

Older adults in Polk County can make a contribution to science while possibly reducing their risk of developing dementia.
The University of South Florida is seeking local participants in a study to measure the effects of “brain games” on delaying mental decline. The university recently received a $44.4 million federal grant to continue its Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training (PACT) study.

Preliminary data from clinical trials indicate that a particular type of computerized training improves mental ability, USF officials said in announcing the new study. A recent study found decreases of nearly 50% for some in the risk of developing dementia after engaging in rigorous computer games, said Aryn Bush, a professor in USF’s School of Aging Studies. ....
