A U.S. Army cannon has hit a target 43.5 miles away, marking a milestone in the push to develop longer range artillery, the service said.
Three M982A1 Excalibur weapons were launched from its Extended Range Cannon Artillery, during a test at the Army s training area in Yuma, Ariz., Army Futures Command said in a statement this week. The weapon hit its target on the third attempt. ....

The Army s Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) system successfully hit a target 43 miles away, or 70 kilometers, during a test at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona on Saturday. The successful test comes as the U.S. Army has been looking to close the field artillery gap against military adversaries like Russia.
The ERCA cannon uses an M109A7 Paladin Integrated Management (PIM) howitzer chassis and replaces a 39-caliber gun tube with a 58-caliber, 30-foot one. The system allows the Army to dramatically boost artillery ranges using Excalibur munitions made by Ratheon in combination with an XM1113 using supercharged propellant. ....

Army's long-range cannon hits target 43 miles away

It took the ERCA three shots before it successfully hit the target, underscoring the work yet to be done on the system. The Pentagon hopes it will be operational by 2023.
Such systems part of the Army’s broader long-range precision fires strategy could be crucial in future conflicts. The goal, Pentagon officials have said, is to field multiple cannons and other ground-based systems that have much greater range than anything America’s foes can put on the battlefield.
Such an advantage would allow the U.S. to target enemy positions with relatively low risk to American personnel.
The system tested in Arizona over the weekend is just the beginning. The Army also has prioritized research into a “Strategic Long Range Cannon,” which could hit targets over 1,000 miles away. ....
