A proposal for a community solar farm off Wards Road in Campbell County was met with skepticism Monday from the planning commission and discontent from surrounding landowners.
Ultimately, the topic was tabled until the commission and the board of supervisors can hold a joint meeting to discuss the future of solar energy in the county.
Hundreds of acres of solar farms already are in development in Campbell County, with sprawling utility scale projects approved in Gladys, Altavista and Rustburg. But the request was the second community solar facility to be heard by the county in the past few months, the first of which was denied approval in early March. ....

The Junior League of Lynchburg is creating a Period Access Distribution Center âto create a referral and distribution system of free feminine hygiene products to adult women who are in need in Lynchburg and the surrounding areas.â
In conjunction with the YWCA of Central Virginia and Gleaning for the World, the center will enlist help from referring partners to enroll women in need in a subscription service to provide a free monthly supply of period products, according to a JLL news release. Referring partners will receive supplies to help their clients who have immediate needs.
The program will launch this spring with a $50,000 budget, which will include a part-time administrator working out of the PAD Center headquarters at the YWCA on Church Street. Junior League funding also will go toward having an educational and advocacy curriculum in 2022-2023 in partnership with other local organizations. CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – For many Brookneal parents, childcare can be hard to find because the area is considered a “daycare desert.”
“One of the parents I spoke to would get up at 4 a.m. and would drive all the way to the other side of Lynchburg to drop their children off, to come back here to be at work by 6 a.m.” said Nicole Crews, an early childhood education teacher.
That’s because, according to Crews, the closest childcare facility is about 30 miles away. ....
