Drivers traveling through Henderson County Wednesday night should be aware of some overnight closures on Interstate 26.
Officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) say a section of I-26 East will be closed Wednesday night, June 2, and motorists will be diverted onto a detour that will be modified to handle the increased traffic.
I-26 East will be closed from U.S. 25 Business (Exit 44) to Upward Road (Exit 53) starting no earlier than 8 p.m., when a contractor for NCDOT will begin removing the final section of the old bridge on Brookside Camp Road over the interstate. ....

Henderson County News: Brookside Camp Road to close for bridge replacement

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation is scheduled to close the bridge on Brookside Camp Road over I-26 for 14 days starting today. Crews will use those two weeks to connect a new bridge to Brookside Camp Road on both sides and apply the finishing touches to the bridge including new lane markings. Then crews will remove the old bridge in segments at night.
Southbound traffic on Brookside Camp Road will be detoured to Howard Gap Road, Naples Road and U.S. 25 (Asheville Highway). Northbound traffic will use those roads in reverse.
The bridge on Brookside Camp Road is one of seven bridges over I-26 in Henderson County being replaced as part of a larger project to widen I-26 to six lanes. Transportation officials remind drivers to be alert and slow down in work zones while also obeying all posted traffic signs. ....

Watkins also reported that the Kanuga Road widening has been pushed off the current State Transportation Improvement Plan. The project now has a construction date of 2040. “It’s so far out they just put a date out in the future,” Watkins said.
In projects related to the I-26 widening:
• Clear Creek Road, which had been closed while a replacement bridge went up, is scheduled to reopen Monday.
• Brookside Camp Road is scheduled to close May 3 for 14 days in order to shift the roadway from the old bridge to the new span.
• Butler Bridge Road bridge is being constructed in place. The project is on schedule and the road is expected to reopen on Sept. 11. ....

I-26 widening on schedule despite rain; lane closures on the way

Though it s been delayed some by rainy weather, work on widening Interstate 26 is going smoothly and on schedule, engineers say, with lane closures and rerouting on the horizon.
The $531 million project to turn I-26 from four to six lanes between the Brevard Road and U.S. 64 interchanges is progressing on schedule, set to be finished in 2024, say local officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Construction work is in full swing along I-26, but rain over the past six months or so has slowed work, say Mike Patton, NCDOT Division 14 Resident Engineer and Luke Middleton, resident engineer overseeing the Buncombe County portion of the widening project. ....
