After just over two hours behind closed doors, some Republican members of the state legislature emerged with representatives of the N.C. High School Athletic Association with an optimistic tone about the path forward. With House Bill 91 looming, a bill that would dissolve the NCHSAA, the two groups met to discuss concerns lawmakers have about the association s oversight, finances, and rules It was a great meeting. We really appreciated the chance to get in there. I think we got a lot accomplished and I think everybody s in a better place now, said NCHSAA Board of Directors President Bobby Wilkins, who is the principal at Hendersonville High School.

He said there would be more conversations in the future. Show Transcript mm for all of you that are here, bobby Wilkins is the president of the north Carolina High School Athletic Association is the principle of Hendersonville High School and he will speak on behalf of the association and the board of directors today, there will be no further statement beyond this from the association today. So bobby, I ll let you make an opening statement and then take some questions. It was a great meeting. We really appreciated the chance to get in there. I think we have got a lot accomplished and uh I think everybody is in a better place now. So it was really good. We appreciated them inviting us and it was a good meeting when you say in a better place or sorry, wirelessly with the oreo, you see in a better place. What does that mean? Well, I think that you know, when we start out, everybody is in a different place uh and we got in there and we, we chatted, we uh you know, we talked about stuff and uh, it was very, it was very professional and, and to the point and, and a lot got accomplished that way. Can you tell some of the specifics of what, what the negotiations? Well, I would be here in an hour or two if I did that. It s just a lot of things that, you know, have been questioned over the years. And I think, you know, it was, it was very just and uh, stuff that that we needed to talk about and, and we did, I think it s good and I ve been in a long time. So I ve been a part of this is my 43rd year in high school athletics. So, you know, it was some good stuff. Did you address household 91 at all? Well, I mean, again, we re not going to talk about specifics on what went on or I ll be here for two hours. So I d rather not even say. But, uh, there s a lot of things talked about. The high school athletic association is not going away. Yeah. Well, I certainly hope not. I think it does a lot of stuff for, for a lot of kids. So yeah, I think that s, that would be the way I d answer that. Just to reiterate, would you say walking onto this meeting that you ve made progress today with lawmakers? Well, yeah, I think, I think, like, say, I think it was a great meeting and they were very nice and kind and I think we were nice and kind back and I think we got a lot accomplished, but no promises were made in terms of legislation moving or not moving or etcetera. We re still and we re still chatting. I mean, I don t know how to answer that question. What are the next steps? Well, we re gonna, you know, and we re in the process of updating everything that has happened, um and making sure everybody knows what s going on. And and again, I think it was great because we learned stuff and they learned stuff. It was just a good meeting. Do you anticipate coming back to the to the legislature waiting time sooner having more discussions with lawmakers? Oh, yeah, I think I think definitely will do that. And again, it was it was a very good meeting. It was it was not anything negative, nothing negative came out of his all positive. So that was great.
