Skylight Music Theatre turns children's words into songs about COVID


Having trouble finding words for the tedium and terror of the past year of COVID-19 pandemic? Trouble no more: Local children have done the work for you. 
As part of this year s KidsWrites educational program, Skylight Music Theatre asked students in third through eighth grades to respond to the theme of Time Capsule. Through virtual workshops, Skylight teaching artists stimulated 1,650 pieces of student writing from 58 classrooms in Milwaukee Public Schools and other schools. 
Skylight composers and musical theater performers have adapted some of them into an online Time Capsule show, which will be available for viewing May 3 to June 13.
The young writers took on a year that included coronavirus disruptions, the killing of George Floyd, Black Lives Matter demonstrations and counterdemonstrations, plus a contentious presidential election and its jarring aftermath. One act performances planned after previous cancellation

The arts are alive and well during the covid-19 pandemic as the one-acts start up. Despite a delay in mainstage productions, the directing class has no intention of slowing down.
 “We’re really happy to bring theatre back,” said Lexi Powell, a senior theatre major. “It’s been a while since we’ve had any productions and I’m glad we get to direct them.”
There are currently four one-acts in the works. 
First, “A Roz by Any Other Name” written by Brett Ryback, is set to be directed by Allyson Fricke. Next, “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin is directed by Rheann Rodenbur. Third, “I Hate Shakespeare!” written by Steph Deferie is directed by Lexi Powell. Finally, “If the Shoe Fits” written by Matt Thompson, Matt Chiorini and David Vermette, is directed by Stuart Wilke.  ....
