Council recruiting young people to co-design gambling campaign
Council is currently recruiting young people aged 16-25 to participate in a series of co-design workshops to create an effective harm prevention campaign.
We are seeking young people to help us create effective prevention strategies for gambling-related harm. As part of the grant funds for this program participants will be reimbursed $25/hour.
Workshops will run weekly, kicking off in April, and there will be opportunities to learn, get creative and develop skills. Participants from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including First Nations young people, are strongly encouraged to apply.

BANGUI – At least 24,000 children under five across 14 of the Central African Republic’s 35 health districts are at risk of severe acute malnutrition following the recent spike in violence across the country – UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) warned today. Out of these 14 districts, which are now on alert for a child malnutrition crisis, six currently have no resources or capacity to respond to children’s acute needs.
The two UN agencies also noted that violence and insecurity are exacerbating population displacement, hindering humanitarian access and causing food prices to rise. ....

EPA fines concrete supplier $23K for water pollution

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has fined concrete supplier Hymix Australia Pty Ltd for an alleged water pollution incident and allegedly failing to operate control equipment in a proper and efficient manner.
The EPA inspected the Hymix concrete batching plant at Kincumber, near Gosford on 19 October 2020 in response to community concerns over dirty water pollution coming from the plant.
During the inspection, EPA officers found evidence of concrete waste water discharging into a stormwater drain on Cochrone Street which leads to Kincumber Creek. Officers also noted that a pump in the settling pit was not operating, which would normally send dirty water back to a holding tank for re-use. The discharges had elevated pH levels and total suspended solids, with the potential to cause harm to the local environment. ....

Scientists have discovered a route of introduction for High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza Virus (HPAIV) H5N8 into Japan and, in parallel, have investigated the potential of two human anti-influenza drugs for the control of HPAI in birds.

Since October 30, 2020, there have been over 30 recorded outbreaks of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) in domestic poultry and wild fowl in Japan. This outbreak was caused by the influenza A virus H5N8, a known High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza Virus (HPAIV). In such a scenario, identification of the source of the virus and its transmission route is important to control its spread. ....
