Ballad's COVID-19 hospitalizations reach highest point since Feb. 3

For the first time in nearly two months, Ballad Health was treating more than 100 people hospitalized with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on Monday, worrying hospital officials and prompting renewed concerns about the impact another increase in hospitalizations will have on healthcare workers whoâve battled the virus for more than a year now.
âItâs really hard on the team,â Balladâs Chief Infection Prevention Officer Jamie Swift said. âTheyâve come through this, they now know what could lie ahead and thatâs really disheartening and thatâs hard for a lot of them.â
Balladâs Chief Operating Officer Eric Deaton said the systemâs in-house modeling shows a potential surge to more than 150-160 hospitalizations if current trends continue. ....

Researchers found that sunlight inactivates the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) more than eight times more quickly than predicted. Paolo Luzzatto-Fegiz, a professor of mechanical engineering at the
University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara), and his colleagues reviewed recent studies that explored the effects of different bands of ultraviolet (UV) light – namely, UVA, UVB and UVC radiation – on SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19.
UVA is weakest among the three while UVC is the most energetic and has been shown to inactivate viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. Nearly all of the UV radiation that reaches the surface is UVA since all of UVC and most of UVB rays are absorbed by Earth’s ozone layer. ....

Wyoming employers offered free suicide prevention training

The Wyoming Department of Health is offering free suicide prevention training to employers and their employees across the state.
In 2019, Wyomingâs suicide rate was the highest in the U.S. and almost twice the national average, according to the American Association of Suicidology.
âWyoming unfortunately has historically high suicide rates and, on average, one Wyoming resident dies by suicide every two days,â Lindsay Martin, the Health Departmentâs Injury and Violence Prevention Program manager, said in a press release.
The free online training offered to employers for their employees is called âQuestion, Persuade and Refer.â Among other things, it covers how to âquestion, persuade and referâ someone who might be suicidal, what the causes of suicidal behavior are, how to recognize the warning signs and how to get help. ....
