Board eliminated Wilson's contract, but he's leaving with cash in hand

ANGOLA — Certain members of the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County Board of Trustees campaigned for office sometime back, vowing to eliminate perks for board members and cut the pay of administrators, particularly that of Superintendent Brent Wilson.
School board members no longer get health insurance coverage and there have been some benefit cuts — which were then reinstated — for administrators.
When it comes to Wilson, the board decided in 2016 not to renew his contract, which has a current base pay of $149,480, but with benefits — particularly annuities — takes it up over $200,000.
After a breach of contract lawsuit brought by Wilson against the board was settled on Wednesday that will end the 15-year veteran superintendent’s tenure with MSD on June 30. The agreement also is sending Wilson out the door with a settlement that some administrators at MSD privately said they wish was coming their way. ....

Police pursuit ends in exchange of gunfire
KENDALLVILLE — A traffic stop in Fort Wayne led to a pursuit and ended with gunshots fired between police and a LaOtto man just outside the Johnson Mobile Home Park off Waits Road early Thursday morning.
The suspect, Justin R. Weikel, 40, was transported to an area hospital, according to Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Brian Walker. Weikel’s condition was listed as stable as of 7:55 a.m.
Initial reports indicated Weikel had been shot, but police later said that might not be the case. He was the lone occupant of his vehicle.
No officers or civilians were injured, but an unoccupied DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department vehicle was struck with gunfire. ....

Superintendent sues school over alleged open door violation

ANGOLA — A lawsuit was filed late Wednesday against the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County board over an alleged Indiana Open Door violation that’s related to ongoing turmoil between it and Superintendent Brent Wilson.
The suit follows Wilson’s attorneys having first filed a public access complaint, alleging the board held an illegal executive session in January. Public Access Counselor Luke Britt on Thursday said a decision in the Feb. 8 complaint has not been rendered.
The lawsuit asks the Steuben Circuit Court to enjoin the board from continuing to violate the Indiana Open Door Law, something the lawsuit alleges is a continuing problem of the MSD board. The suit also seeks to void any action taken by the board in an illegal session. ....
