HARTFORD (AP) Terrence Cheng, an only child of Taiwanese immigrants who rose in the academic world to become director of the University of Connecticut s Stamford campus, was appointed Friday as the next president of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system.
The state Board of Regents for Higher Education voted unanimously to approve Cheng for the $360,000-a-year post that oversees 17 schools that serve more than 72,000 students.
Cheng, 49, who also is an English professor at UConn, will begin his new job on July 2. He will succeed Mark Ojakian, who retired in January after five years as CSCU president and a longer career in state government including chief of staff to former Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. ....

After a six month search, the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities Board of Regents on Friday appointed Terrence Cheng, a UConn administrator, to serve as the system’s new president.
Cheng, who is currently the director of the University of Connecticut’s Stamford campus and an English professor there, will oversee a CSCU system that serves more than 72,000 students attending the state’s 12 community colleges, four regional universities and Charter Oak State College.
“From the advanced manufacturing technology centers that help make Connecticut a leader in defense and aerospace, to the full spectrum of healthcare programs that help prepare leaders and practitioners to handle the next pandemic, to the strong liberal arts foundations that open students’ minds and challenge them to think differently, our public colleges and universities have it all,” Cheng said in a statement. “I look forward to working closely with CSCU’s amazing faculty an ....

CSCU students and faculty protest against the Board of Regents’ contract proposals outside of Central Connecticut State University on Feb. 26.
Connecticut State Colleges and Universities faculty and students gathered outside of Central Connecticut State University Friday morning to protest the Board of Regents’ recent contract proposals, saying the changes could lead to larger class sizes and possibly losing accreditation.
“The BOR must … understand their proposals are developed with union-busting in mind,” said Eastern Connecticut State University anthropology professor Sarah Baires. “And while they might believe they are attempting to build a better CSU system, they are ultimately destroying opportunities for students to be successful and hence undermining the future of the state.” ....
