Solana Beach School District celebrated another first day of school as all sixth graders were welcomed back to four days a week in-person instruction on Feb. 8, moving out of a hybrid model that had students online two days a week. Since the fall, district parents have been pushing for more in-school days as online learning has been a struggle mentally, emotionally and academically for many students.
To bring back the larger 4-6 grade classes in the district, some classrooms have been extended into secondary learning spaces in order to accommodate all students while maintaining distancing and stable groupings per California Department of Public Health guidelines. ....

The youngest Solana Beach School District students are experiencing less Zoom and more in-person learning and playing as the district continued its phased approach of returning more students more days this month. Now kindergarten through third grade students are in school in-person four days a week.
With third grade students returning on Jan. 25, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Sabrina Lee said at the Jan. 21 school board meeting that she knows there were smiles behind the masks: “You can’t see their faces but see their cheeks rise under their masks and hear the laughter in classrooms,” Lee said.
In San Diego County, 429,556 students remain in distance learning while 25,781 are in full-time learning on campus and 58,881 are attending school in a hybrid model like Solana Beach. Solana Beach’s phase-in will continue with sixth grade students returning first on Feb. 8 followed by fifth grade on Feb. 22 and fourth grade on March 1. Superint ....

During this unprecedented school year of hybrid instruction, the Solana Beach School District is working to keep track of students’ academic progress as well as their social and emotional wellbeing.
At the board’s Dec. 10 meeting, the board received the results from a universal social and emotional screener that was given to all third through sixth grade students. Per the results, 94% of students said they had a trusted adult in their life, 81% said they like school, 90% said they feel safe and 91% said they “like being me.” Lisa Denham, the coordinator of student services, said each school site’s social and emotional learning team reviewed the results and identified students and families who needed additional support. ....
