Ogdensburg fire union president says city manager putting residents at risk with reckless actions

OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg Fire Union President Jason Bouchard says the city manager’s one-vehicle response goes against department of health standards and puts citizens at risk.
“Ogdensburg City Manager Steve Jellie, who recently laid off five firefighters, wants desperately to have his way, no matter how unsafe or how much resistance he gets. Ogdensburg Firefighters are unanimously opposed to running only one engine to all emergency calls. The CM simply won’t listen and is pushing us to implement his plan,” Bouchard said in a prepared statement.
Bouchard said one big concern the firefighters have is the growing spread of COVID-19. ....

Ogdensburg manager, firefighters trade barbs over use of fire engines


OGDENSBURG — The public battle between the city and its fire union continued Friday with a fierce letter from the union’s president, saying City Manager Stephen P. Jellie “wants desperately to have his way, no matter how unsafe or how much resistance he gets.”
In a letter to media Friday, Jason T. Bouchard, president of Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters, Local 1799, called out Mr. Jellie — who is also the fire chief — for opting to have just one fire engine running to all emergency calls.
“There’s so many reasons why his one engine response is a bad idea, and we will eventually pay the price for this thoughtless move. Responding to a structure fire with only one engine, with a backup engine at least 10 minutes behind, could very well have devastating consequences,” Mr. Bouchard wrote. “We’re at a complete loss for how and why this is happening. OGDENSBURG – As state police investigate a dispute between Ogdensburg Mayor Jeffrey Skelly and suspended firefighter Gerald Mack, the firefighter’s union president is accusing the city manager of provoking Mack in the past.
Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters Local 1799 Union President Jason Bouchard says that City Manager Stephen Jellie mocked and taunted Mack after issuing a suspension and disciplinary hearing notice on Dec. 3. Mack was later notified of a hearing that would be held regarding his possible termination.
“When Mr. Jellie walked in the room, the first thing he demanded was that one of the two union reps leave. When asked why, he said, because I’m allowing one union person here.
