The letter from 28 Republican lawmakers arrived before the president had even moved into her new home.
Typically, when conservative politicians send early demands to public-college presidents, they focus on the rising cost of college. But in this three-page missive, that concern was secondary to another target: programming designed to support the college’s underrepresented students.
“This drive to create a diversified and inclusive culture,” the lawmakers wrote to President Marlene Tromp of Boise State University, not even two weeks into her job in July 2019, “becomes divisive and exclusionary because it separates and segregates students.” That is not, they said, “the Idaho way.” ....

Mar. 16 Boise State University announced Tuesday it was canceling several core curriculum classes after allegations that at least one student was degraded for their beliefs in class.
The cancellation affects roughly 1,300 students in 52 sections of UF 200: Foundations of Ethics and Diversity, according to the university.
We have been made aware of a series of concerns, culminating in allegations that a student or students have been humiliated and degraded in class on our campus for their beliefs and values, the university said in a written statement provided to the Idaho Statesman. Effective immediately, we must suspend UF 200. ....

The reasons to live in Idaho are many a strong community spirit, dizzyingly beautiful landscapes and a proud heritage of free thought. Nonetheless, the state faces profound challenges. According to Mental Health America, Idaho ranks 48th out of 50 states and Washington D.C. when it comes to providing access to mental health services. And Idaho, like other states in the Intermountain West, contends with some of the highest suicide rates in the country.
COVID-19 has only increased the challenges in Idaho and beyond. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that among young adults aged 18 to 24, one in four reported seriously considering suicide. An Active Minds survey in September found that 75% of students reported their mental health worsened during the pandemic. ....
