The Birmingham City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to implement a citywide mask ordinance that would run through May 24. On Friday, Alabama’s statewide mask order, which has been in place since July 2020, is set to expire at Gov. Kay Ivey’s direction.
The city council passed a “similar, if not identical” mandatory mask ordinance last spring, according to a Sunday afternoon statement by the body. It went on to state that if the ordinance passes, the council has until May 18 to evaluate whether it should be amended or repealed before it lapses. ....

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) -
UPDATE Feb. 2: The Birmingham City Council unanimously approved a resolution that opens the door for potential vaccination sites to be set up at Legion Field and recreation centers across the city.
Council President William Parker said that the Coronavirus Pandemic Response resolution will allow for testing, vaccination and related activities at Legion Field and all city-owned recreation centers in Birmingham.
President Parker said the Council is focused on all of Birmingham’s 99 neighborhoods having access to vaccination distribution. ....

With COVID-19 cases up, Birmingham City Council Meets Virtually

For the first time ever, the Birmingham City Council on Tuesday held its weekly meeting virtually.Â
Councilors and other city officials met through WebEx, a web and video conferencing app, and streamed the meeting on the councilâs Facebook page.Â
The decision came after a recent surge in coronavirus cases and one week after Mayor Randall Woodfin tested positive for the disease. The mayor was hospitalized Monday evening with COVID-19 pneumonia, but is in stable condition, according his personal physician.Â
âWe have decided to go into virtual meetings as a result of an increase in case numbers,â said Kim Garner, spokesperson for the Birmingham City Council. âThe council is monitoring the health crisis and consulting with health professionals regularly and for the time being we have decided to go into virtual meetings as a result.” ....

City Council Approves $13M Incentives for Carraway Hospital Project

The redevelopment of the former Carraway Hospital site near downtown Birmingham moved one step closer to reality when the City Council approved a $13.2 million incentive package for the project.
“This project is a game changer for the city of Birmingham and I’m particularly excited about the potential tenants that may be coming there but also the fact that it’s going to involve a variety of housing types including workforce housing,” said Councilor Darrell O’Quinn, who represents parts of the area.
The project is bigger than just the Northside community, he said.
“It’s not only the Carraway Hospital campus but there are surrounding parcels that were part of this deal. The total impact of this is huge. When you combine it with the work that is being done at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, the City Walk project under the 20-59 bridge, Southtown redevelopment, we’re talking billions of dollars in reinvestments in t ....
