In a campus-wide message on May 5, Portland State University’s President Stephen Percy notified the campus community that all students, staff and faculty returning to in-person learning for fall term are required to have a COVID-19 vaccine.
“Starting fall term 2021, the COVID-19 vaccine will be required for in-person students, faculty and staff unless they claim a medical or religious exemption,” Percy stated. “Until the Food and Drug Administration has fully approved at least one vaccine, a personal exemption is available.”
PSU joined Oregon State University as the only other public university to announce a COVID-19 vaccine requirement. OSU was the first, and made their requirement known Tuesday. ....

Portland State University officials said Wednesday the school would require on-campus students, faculty and staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 starting in September.
Students will have to verify their vaccination status before starting on-campus classes in the fall term. In a letter to students, faculty and staff, President Stephen Percy said the school’s dense urban campus gives it a “unique responsibility” to guard against the virus’ spread.
“All of us are eager to put the COVID-19 pandemic behind us and come together again in person as a campus community,” Percy wrote. “Widespread vaccination is our clearest and best path toward that future.” ....

These are some of the questions the Portland State Faculty Senate set out to answer in a resolution passed unanimously on March 1.

“Academic freedom is to the university what the freedoms of expression, association, and assembly are to democracy,” the resolution reads. “As with the abuse of democratic rights, carelessness in the exercise of academic freedom can undermine, stifle, and annihilate academic freedom itself.”
