The Defence Secretary and the President

Sri Lanka is led by a man who has, by his admission, two faces. In a more democratic avatar is Gotabaya Rajapaksa the President. Here, the individual in question is presented as smart, suave and sage. Before he spoke, his suit bespoke, as rapper Kanye put it in song, captures man and mission. An older and for many years now a dormant avatar is a killer who enjoys killing. There is no point in using euphemisms when Gotabaya Rajapaksa himself dispenses with them. What does it mean for Sri Lanka’s democracy to have this two-faced individual as President?
My Editor first warned me about Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Defence Secretary, a couple of years after the end of the war. A pro-Rajapaksa businessman owned the paper I was featured in. The Editor’s politics were opposed to mine. However, he was committed to a diversity of opinion in the newspaper and fought hard for it. I was attracted to the idea of writing to what would essentially be an audience hostile to my worldview and it ....

Too polarized to reconcile? The struggle for transitional justice in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, the challenge to achieve transitional justice lies not in the process alone but also in coming to terms with the ultimate goal. In a post-war context, what is the ideal? As a multi-ethnic society where do we aspire to be? If we do not embrace reconciliation, is the dream to remain as we are now, deeply and destructively divided?
For transition to be successful, the people must trust and accept the process.  However, a history of systematic discrimination, majoritarianism, and ethnic conflict has resulted in hostilities, prejudice, and diminishing tolerance between communities in Sri Lanka. The way different groups perceive each other (along ethnic/ nationalist lines) has also impacted their perception of the best way forward. ....

Sri Lanka's mandatory cremation policy is playing politics with the dead-GTF – The Island

The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) says that while appreciating Sri Lanka’s relative success in the management of COVID-19, it would like to express its strong condemnation of the mandatory cremation of all bodies suspected to have been infected with coronavirus; it has called upon the leaders of all communities to do all they can to […] ....

Continuing Crimes – Matale To Mullivaikkal - Colombo Telegraph

Continuing Crimes – Matale To Mullivaikkal
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva, should explain in court why newly released government lists show hundreds of Sinhalese and Tamils went ‘missing’ in Matale in 1989 and Mullivaikal in 2009. Both men remain criminally liable under international and domestic law for enforced disappearances that occurred under their command and control. Gotabaya Rajapaksa was secretary of defence in 2009;  Shavendra was a key divisional commander, who is now designated by the US government for credible allegations of gross violations of human rights.

Recently released data from Sri Lanka’s
Office of Missing Persons (OMP) shows that more than 330 Tamils are classified as having gone ‘missing’ from the final days of the war when the country was fully under the government’s control. The data also shows 154 Sinhalese from Matale Distict are regarded as having gone ‘missing’ in ....
