Perhaps, it’s no longer news that the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday sentenced a former leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Uganda to 25 years imprisonment.
The jailed ex-war lord was himself abducted by the rebel group as a child, and later graduated into forcing children to kill.
Dominic Ongwen, 45, was found guilty of 61 charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including rape, murder and sexual enslavement, committed in Northern Uganda between July 2002 and 31 December.
In summarising the decision to sentence him, Presiding Judge Bertram Schmitt highlighted the unique nature of the case.
“The Chamber is confronted in the present case with a unique situation. It is confronted with a perpetrator who willfully and lucidly brought tremendous suffering upon his victims”, he said. ....

NEW YORK, USA, May 07, 2021,-/African Media Agency (AMA)/-Dominic Ongwen, 45, was found guilty of 61 charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including rape, murder and sexual enslavement, committed in Northern Uganda between July 2002 and 31 December. 
 
 
In summarizing the decision to sentence him, Presiding Judge Bertram Schmitt highlighted the unique nature of the case.

Despite his conviction with crimes against humanity, the International Criminal Court did not opt for the maximum available punishment, citing the former child soldier s own suffering.
Dominic Ongwen was taken into ICC custody in 2015
The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday sentenced former Ugandan warlord Dominic Ongwen to 25 years in jail for war crimes and crimes against humanity. 
The former child soldier who became a commander of the Lord s Resistance Army (LRA) was convicted in February of 61 crimes including rape, sexual enslavement, child abductions, torture and murder.
Dominic Ongwen fully intended all of these crimes. He played a key role in their commission, he participated in the planning and personally took part in it. It was he who decided to launch the attacks, he selected the fighters and issued the specific instructions ahead of each attack, the ruling said. ....
