Forest Service: Avoid Unnecessary Yard Debris Burning While It's This Dry In Alachua County

The counties around Alachua remain at a moderate level of fire danger.
Although there is no official yard burn ban, the service’s Waccasassa Forestry Center is asking residents and visitors to use extreme caution when using outdoor ignition sources and refrain from unnecessary burning of yard debris.
According to Rick Dolan, the manager of the Waccasassa Forestry Center, the main reason our area is experiencing this very high risk level is because of how susceptible our local environment is to fire in relation to the extended dry weather.
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is a habitat for many native and migrating animals, a serene escape for Gainesville residents or visitors and a home to large amounts of trees and brush. There are many other factors that contribute to the possibility of fire danger such as wind gust or human action, but ultimately the mix of dry weather and a viable burn area is a recipe for fire. ....

Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is a nature lover’s dream. With miles of trails and an abundance of wildlife, the park is well worth the 40-minute drive north.
“Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is biologically, geologically and historically unique,” says Alex Cronin with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s press office. “This park became Florida’s first state preserve in 1971 and is now designated as a National Natural Landmark.”

North Central Florida is into its annual wildfire season and so far, so good.
Most of the Florida peninsula from about Citrus County on the Gulf coast through southern Marion to Flagler on the Atlantic is either abnormally dry or in a drought.
Areas above that line, however, have had plenty of rain.
But with a month or so until the start of the typical summer weather pattern, the region is not out of the wildfire woods yet, said Ludie Bond, wildfire mitigation specialist with Florida Forest Service Waccasassa district headquartered in Gainesville. ....
