May 21, 2021 The Unions Take Sugar City in Large Numbers They came from all over the country, some as far as rural Toledo, to send a resounding message to Prime Minister Briceño and his government.  The unions sent that message during what may be the largest gathering of teachers and public officers since the beginning of industrial action in late April.  They walked and sang through the main streets of Orange Walk Town before culminating at the People’s Stadium.  Throughout it all, they remained resolute in their position that government must adopt good governance measures.   Isani Cayetano, Reporting The unions descended en masse on Sugar City today with busloads of teachers and public officers arriving from distant reaches of the country.  Orange Walk is the hometown of the prime minister and since he has been noticeably absent from the negotiating table, they’ve decided to bring the message to the source.

Nature Conservancy agreement a good deal: 266,000 acres of land for Belizeans

In last Wednesday’s meeting of the Senate, Senator for Government Business Eamon Courtenay went into details of a land agreement between the Government of Belize under the Barrow administration and The Nature Conservancy (TNC). It was his attempt to humiliate the past administration, as he went on to call the deal “nefarious” and a “scandal”. He says that because of a number of tax write-offs, we now “find ourselves in this impossible situation today.” Representatives of the United Democratic Party (UDP) held a press conference on Friday to address the issue. Senator for the UDP, Hon. Michael Peyrefitte, first explained that the lands, covering some 266,000 acres in the Yalbac, Gallon Jug, and Laguna Seca areas of Orange Walk and sold to TNC for some USD $72 million, were all privately owned lands. As a result, the agreement did not necessarily need to be presented. Still, this agreement was never hidden nor secret, since the Government, under the Barrow administration

Former B T L Chairman Net Vasquez is Laid to Rest

Apr 28, 2021 Net Vasquez Founder of Tropical Vision Limited and former B.T.L. Chairman Nestor Vasquez was laid to rest on Tuesday. A host of close family and close friends gathered to honor him during a virtual ceremony.  Among the attendees were Prime Minister Briceño and former Prime Ministers Manuel Esquivel and Dean Barrow.  Eulogies were given by his son Jules Vasquez and former Prime Minister Barrow.   Dean Barrow, Former Prime Minister “I first got to know Net Vasquez through politics, of course. He was, by the time I finished law school in 1975, a well-known accountant who numbered some important and wealthy business persons among his clients. He had helped to found the fledgling party of Manuel Esquivel, Curl Thompson, Harry Lawrence and Paul Rodriguez in 1972. The liberals then joined with the traditional opposition NIP of Philip Goldson and Dean Lindo’s breakaway P.D.M. to form the United Democratic Party in 1973.
