NUC Gives FUTA Approval for Medical Programme

The National Universities Commission (NUC), has given approval for the commencement of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) programme by the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) with effect from the 2020/2021 academic session.
The approval, was disclosed by the Deputy Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo in a statement quoting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Adamu Rasheed.
Adegbenro said the approval, followed the recommendation of the panel of experts from the commission which carried out a resource verification visit.
According to the commission, in the letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor Professor Joseph Fuwape and signed by the Director of Academic Planning, Dr. NB Salihu, “Resource verification was carried out by a panel of experts to the proposed medical program of FUTA with a view to assessing the human and material resources available for their establishment. When Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu reported for work as Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in February, 2016, he came cracking several jokes. One of them was that he intended to take the university “from noun to verb”.
Five years down the lane, that pun has assumed a palpable reality. The university, founded by the Shagari administration in 1983, suspended a year later by the military regime of General Buhari and re-invented by the Obasanjo administration in 2002, was impacted in many ways by Adamu.
Appointed from his base at Bayero University, Kano, he retired as NOUN VC on February 10, 2021 after completing his statutory five-year single term. ....

Coronavirus: Don picks holes in online teaching by institutions

An expert in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode of education, Prof. Olufemi Peters, has identified standard as the “weak-link” in the recent flurry by the single-mode universities in Nigeria to offer online education in the race to find an answer to the Covid-19 challenge.
A statement by Ibrahim Sheme, Director, Media and Publicity of NOUN quoted Prof. Peters as speaking during an inaugural lecture delivered virtually on Thursday at the institution.
“Peters said many otherwise single-mode, face-to-face (f2f) universities are fast converting to dual-mode institutions due to certain reasons,”the statement said.
“The professor of chemistry said, while presenting the lecture on the topic: “Weak-Links: A Structural Phenomenon to Systemic Efficiency,” that the altruistic nature of ODL to Nigeria and its instructional delivery has an established standard, which may be the weak-link to the latest “converts” offering online ....
