New condenser makes water from air, even in hot sun
Access to clean water is a pressing issue for many people around the world. Even in areas with ample water resources, a lack of infrastructure or reliable energy means purifying that water is sometimes extremely difficult.
That’s why a water vapor condenser designed by University of Wisconsin-Madison engineers could be revolutionary. Unlike other radiative vapor condensers which can only operate at night, the new design works in direct sunlight and requires no energy input.
“Water sustainability is a global issue,” says Zongfu Yu, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at UW-Madison. “You can’t set out to solve the water problem without addressing energy.” ....

A rare sighting of five new hatchling tuatara emerging at Orokonui Ecosantuary has been caught on camera by University of Otago researchers who were undertaking a routine inspection of the nest at the time.
The first indication that hatching was underway was detected by Zoology research assistant Jade Christiansen, who was carefully excavating the gravel to retrieve a small piece of temperature recording equipment.
“I heard a small squeak, and suddenly a tiny hatchling about nine centimetres long scrambled out of the gravel,” Jade says.
“It was definitely a surprise but the best kind of surprise that we could have hoped for.” ....

Story of resurrection ferns and my late colleague who helped discover them in Australia

One afternoon in the late 1970s, my colleague and fellow student Helen Quirk handed me a brown, shrivelled fern frond. It appeared to be dead, and was so dry that when I crushed it between my fingers it disintegrated into a powder.

We placed another piece on a petrie dish and added water. Almost immediately, the piece began to unfold and, as though in time-lapse photography, it appeared to re-green. Within a few hours it looked like a normal, delicate fern.
This was my first encounter with a resurrection fern: remarkable plants that look dead and dry, but when provided with the right conditions – often just the addition of water – rapidly spring back to life. ....
