Not Just For Numbers: Anchoring Biases Decisions Involving Sight, Sound, and Touch

Findings offer critical steps to better understanding the decision-making process
Numeric anchoring is a long-established technique of marketing communication. Once a price is mentioned, that number serves as the basis for – or “anchors” – all future discussions and decisions. But new research shows that this phenomenon is not limited to decisions that involve numbers, the use and understanding of which require high-level cognitive thinking. Anchoring also biases judgments at relatively low levels of cognition when no numbers are involved.
In research recently published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Gaurav Jain, an assistant professor in the Lally School of Management at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, demonstrated that anchoring even occurs in perceptual domains, like sight, sound, and touch. ....

When Volcanoes Go Metal

Date Time
When Volcanoes Go Metal
What would a volcano – and its lava flows – look like on a planetary body made primarily of metal? A pilot study from North Carolina State University offers insights into ferrovolcanism that could help scientists interpret landscape features on other worlds.
Volcanoes form when magma, which consists of the partially molten solids beneath a planet’s surface, erupts. On Earth, that magma is mostly molten rock, composed largely of silica. But not every planetary body is made of rock – some can be primarily icy or even metallic.
“Cryovolcanism is volcanic activity on icy worlds, and we’ve seen it happen on Saturn’s moon Enceladus,” says Arianna Soldati, assistant professor of marine, earth and atmospheric sciences at NC State and lead author of a paper describing the work. “But ferrovolcanism, volcanic activity on metallic worlds, hasn’t been observed yet.” ....

Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission gets to work

Date Time
Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission gets to work
An independent advisory group has been launched to support ambitious climate action in Yorkshire and the Humber.
Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission brings together a team of climate leaders from across public, private and third sectors in what is the largest regional commission of its kind in the UK.
Professor Andy Gouldson, Executive Dean at the University Of Leeds’ Faculty of Environment, is director of the new commission and will oversee its work.
Chaired by Liz Barber, CEO of Yorkshire Water, the commission aims to help the region reduce its carbon emissions as quickly as possible and ensure that people in Yorkshire are prepared to cope with the growing impacts of climate change, such as heatwaves, flooding and sea level rise. ....

Simple blood test could replace surgery for some brain tumour patients

Date Time
Simple blood test could replace surgery for some brain tumour patients
A research breakthrough shows that a simple blood test could reduce, or in some cases replace, the need for intrusive surgery when determining the best course of treatment for patients with a specific type of brain tumour.
Researchers at the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at the University of Plymouth have discovered a biomarker which helps to distinguish whether meningioma – the most common form of adult primary brain tumour – is grade I or grade II.
The grading is significant because lower grade tumours can sometimes remain dormant for long periods, not requiring high risk surgery or harsh treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Tumours classified as grade II can progress to become cancerous and more aggressive treatment may be needed in order to try to control their spread. ....

Scientists develop rapid test for diagnosis of rare set of genetic conditions

Queen Mary University of London
Telomeropathies are caused by premature shortening of the tips of chromosomes, the DNA molecules which contain our genetic information.
They can result in a range of symptoms, including bone marrow failure, pulmonary fibrosis, cancer and liver disease in adults and children. There are currently about 1,000 people living with telomeropathies in the UK, many of which are undetected.
Now, researchers have developed a rapid laboratory test for diagnosing patients showing the many different types of symptoms that can arise from telomeropathies.
The technique, called high-throughput single telomere length analysis (HT-STELA), is a DNA-based blood test that provides high-resolution information. The researchers say it can be applied to a broader range of samples than existing tests, including fresh or frozen blood samples as well as DNA. ....
