An International Team of Scientists Including a CUHK Student Discovers the "Heaviest Black Hole Collision" might be a Boson Star Merger

The hypothetical stars are among the simplest exotic compact objects proposed and constitute well founded dark matter candidates. Within this interpretation, the team is able to estimate the mass of a new particle constituent of these stars, an ultra-light boson with a mass billions of times smaller than that of the electron. Their analysis has been published in the journal
Physical Review Letters on 24 February 2021.
The team is co-led by Dr. Juan Calderón Bustillo, a former professor from the Department of Physics at CUHK and now “La Caixa Junior Leader – Marie Curie Fellow”, at the Galician Institute of High Energy Physics, and Dr. Nicolás Sanchis-Gual, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Aveiro and at the Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon). Five BIT students selected for 12-week Canadian internship

Associate Professor of the Department of Physics at BIT Sindri, Ghanshyam Rai said, “The 12-week internship will begin in May 2021. This is a big achievement for the students as well as the institute as so many of them have never been selected for the scholarship before.”
MITACS is a non profit national research organisation that operates research and training programmes in fields related to industrial and social innovations, in partnership with Canadian academia, private industries and the government.
“From May to October of each year, top-ranked applicants participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in several academic disciplines. This includes science, engineering and mathematics, humanities and social sciences.
