New research could pave the way for safer and more efficient COVID-19 testing

 E-Mail
International research led by Monash University and the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity has achieved a proof of concept for a new, fast, portable saliva screening test that uses an infrared light technology to confirm infection with SARS-CoV-2.
The research is published today in
Angewandte Chemie.
Professor Bayden Wood, from the Monash University School of Chemistry, Dr Phil Heraud formerly from the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute and collaborators Professors Dale Godfrey and Damian Purcell from the Doherty Institute, report on a new diagnostic approach, which involves the use of a portable infrared instrument to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus in saliva. ....

Public kept in dark after mutant virus seen in Victoria's second wave

Victoria s success in controlling it by social restrictions is probably also what prompted British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to impose his own recent hard lockdown in England, Professor Purcell said.
The variant seen in Victoria, known as N501Y, has several key mutations also seen in the British and South African variants.

“Some of the viruses that came out of hotel quarantine in Victoria had some of these key mutations,” said Professor Purcell.
Victoria s Health Department declined to comment.

The British variant, known as B.1.1.7, emerged in September and appears to sport an unusually large number of changes to its genetic code. A second variant, 501.V2, emerged independently in South Africa at about the same time with similar mutations. ....

'Pre-cursor' to highly infectious UK Covid variant escaped hotel quarantine in Victoria

A pre-cursor to the highly infectious mutant Covid strain which has devastated the UK, escaped Victoria s hotel quarantine system back in June, according to a leading Australian scientist.
But Professor Damian Purcell, head of the molecular virology laboratory at the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, said the public were not told about it because it might have spooked people.
Genomic testing suggests 37 people in the coronavirus-hit state were infected with the strain before Victoria s lengthy second lockdown helped to bring the variant under control.
