Hastings Street in Burnaby could see upgrades to speed up TransLink buses

The work will explore upgrades to Hastings Street from Boundary Street all the way to Duthie Avenue, where Hastings Street transitions into Burnaby Mountain Parkway.
Hastings Street is part of the region’s Major Roads Network and Frequent Transit Network, and a designated route for trucks and goods movement. It is a major regional arterial route, linking downtown Vancouver to Simon Fraser University’s campus atop Burnaby Mountain, and communities along the way.
It is one of the region’s busiest bus transit corridors; the 95 B-Line (now known as the R5 RapidBus) on Hastings Street was the ninth busiest bus route in 2019, with 7.5 million annual boardings and average weekday boardings reaching over 24,000 passengers. Over one-third of the people traveling on the corridor move by the buses, which represent less than 1% of the vehicle traffic. ....

Burnaby City Council pours cold water on short, direct route for SFU Gondola

Four city councillors said they were not convinced that sufficient public consultation was performed with the residents of Forest Grove, the neighbourhood impacted by the straight, direct line option of Route 1 between SkyTrain’s Production-Way University Station and the core of the SFU campus atop the mountain.
TransLink staff have informed City of Burnaby staff that the public transit authority is willing to provide compensation for two multi-family residential properties in Forest Grove directly impacted by the aerial line in the Route 1 option, but several city councillors argued this is insufficient.
“I’m not very satisfied with the consultation with the residents of the affected complexes and some of the businesses,” said councillor Pietro Calendino, suggesting properties outside of the 20-metre wide gondola right-of-way should also be compensated. ....

Missing persons case: Burnaby, B.C., student still missing 14 years after leaving for the library

A student left home to go to his university s library on one July day in 2007. He was never seen again.
Police involved in the 14-year-old missing persons case say they still believe someone may know what happened that day.
Asim Chaudhry had told his family he was going to study at the library at Simon Fraser University. The 24-year-old left their home in Burnaby on July 20, presumably heading where he said he was going.
Police know he regularly took the 135 bus from home to reach the university campus, and they know he reached the area of Production Way-University Station. ....

Vancouver Food Bank seeking help from developers for temporary warehouse space

Such a space is needed as the food bank needs to vacate the existing temporary 10,000 sq ft space donated by LowTide Properties later this spring. The food bank has been using the free space since October 2020, but the developer now has plans for the building starting in June 2020.
The new replacement space would ideally be available for the food bank’s use for one or two years, and ideally within Vancouver, given that 60% of its recipients live in the city.
“The City of Vancouver, to date, has been unable to help us find a location, so we have to take matters into our own hands as the need is imminent. The summer will be here before we know it,” said David Long, the CEO of the GVFB, in a statement. ....
