People First Portland and the Foreside Tenant s Union want to intervene in a lawsuit by the Southern Maine Landlord Association seeking to block implementation of a citizen initiative approved by voters in November.

Rent control advocates and a local tenant union want to join the city of Portland in opposing a lawsuit filed by local landlords looking to nullify a series of renter protections passed by voters last fall.
The lawsuit, filed Jan. 28 by the Southern Maine Landlord Association, seeks to block the implementation of “An Act to Protect Tenants,” a citizen initiative approved by 58 percent of the voters in November. It limits most rent increases to the rate of inflation, increases the amount of notice a landlord must provide when not renewing an at-will tenancy and creates a Rent Board to enforce the ordinance and award additional rent increases when appropriate. ....

The New York City Housing Authority has once again earned the embarrassing distinction of being one of the worst landlords in the five boroughs, according to data compiled by Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
The public advocate s office on Tuesday released its annual Worst Landlord Watch List, which judges landlords against the number of open tenant repair requests. While the list measures 100 bad landlords according to the number of B and C violations considered the most egregious received through the city Department Housing Preservation and Development, NYCHA s metrics were measured according to the number of work orders filed, since HPD holds no oversight over NYCHA properties. ....

One thing that didn’t change in New York City in 2020 was its worst landlords.
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams revealed Monday that the two worst landlords in the city are still Jason Korn, who amassed an eye-popping 1,822 violations across 10 buildings this year, and the New York City Housing Authority.
Korn topped the list as the worst individual landlord in 2019. And NYCHA has earned the dishonorable distinction atop the overall list for three straight years.
Williams also for the first time cited Mayor de Blasio’s administration as one of the worst landlords in the city. ....
