Amid an ongoing government-management offensive, exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic to eliminate tens of thousands of jobs across Australia s public universities and accelerate the pro-corporate restructuring of higher education, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) reported in the July edition of its
Advocate magazine:
“NTEU members at the University of Queensland (UQ) Architecture have successfully fought a proposal from Management to disestablish their positions and make them apply for their own jobs a process called a spill ‘n’ fill.
“The ‘Save UQ Architecture’ Campaign declared victory in April, forcing Management to rethink their proposal. Victory came after a brilliant, six-month campaign involving NTEU Members, other staff from the UQ Architecture School, the wider universit ....

In just over a week, mathematics students at Sydney’s Macquarie University have already won the support of well over 400 students and colleagues for a petition demanding the reversal of an announced retrenchment of a highly-regarded mathematics lecturer.
Dr Frank Valckenborgh was told he was made redundant on June 18 as a result of a “hunger games”-style process. Academic staff members across the entire university were forced to compete for their own jobs, via a “spill and fill” process, as the management sought to forcibly retrench more than 80 full-time academics. ....

Benton County approved to move to lower risk

Benton County received approval from Oregon Health Authority to move into the Lower Risk category under the Risk and Protection Framework, beginning Friday May 21. Eligibility to move to the lower risk level requires over 65% of residents 16 and older to have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Last week Benton County Health Department submitted an equity plan and attestation to Oregon Health Authority for its efforts to continue to reduce equity gaps in vaccinations. County eligibility for Lower Risk based on vaccination rates will be assessed weekly.
