This year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) did not disappoint in pushing forward issues dogging women development to the front burner of national discourse. That might explain why, two days after the event, Nigeria’s Senate said it has resolved to amend the Constitution to ensure the gender parity, as well as enact laws to improve the fortunes of women and the girl child in the country.
The National Assembly also agreed to expunge certain provisions contained in the Police Act, Federal Character Law, Electoral Act, Labour Act and Political Parties Constitutions, which infringe on the rights of women in Nigeria. ....

Mairo Al-Makura: First Ladies Deserve Constitutional Roles

Special Assistant to the President on African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM), Dr. Mairo Al-Makura, has called for specified legal roles for the Office of the First Lady particularly in Nigeria and Africa at large.
She said such roles would promote continuity, accountability, and streamlining of development initiatives, noting that the current scenario where every First Lady came with her own programmes, which often disappeared at the expiration of the husband’s tenure was a major setback to national development.
Al-Makura, a former First Lady of Nasarawa State, made the call at the national summit on “Emerging Trends in the Role of First Ladies in National Development” held at the Conference Hall of the State House, Abuja ....

Why African First Ladies deserve constitutional backing - Dr. Al-Makura

Dr. Al-Makura, who was also a former First Lady of Nasarawa State, made the call at the national summit on “Emerging Trends in the Role of First Ladies in National Development” held at the Conference Hall of the Aso Presidential Villa on Thursday.
She said: “Over time, the Office of the First Lady in Nigeria and indeed Africa has been a subject of debate and even controversy as to their essence and roles, given that Africa is a largely patriarchal society and that the Office of the First Lady is neither elected nor stated in the constitution, but only established by conventions emulated from more advanced democracies. ....

Abuja, Dec. 19, 2020 (NAN) An NGO, Women for Women International (WFWI) says it has trained over 5,200 grassroots women on promoting girl-child education and ending violence against women and girls in communities.
The Country Director, WFWI, Ms Bukola Onyishi, said this in Abuja on the sideline of a one-day strategic meeting to develop action plan on priority actions for its Change Agents. ....

NGOs urge women to sustain advocacy on girl-child education

Abuja, Dec. 18, 2020 (NAN) Some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have urged women to sustain advocacies on girl-child education and ending violence against women and girls at the grassroots level.
The organisations made the call at a one-day strategic meeting to develop action plan on priority actions for its Change Agents held in Abuja.
The meeting was organised by Women for Women International (WFWI) in collaboration with Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA).
The Director, Programme and Administration, WRAPA, Anita Ari, said that there was the need for the change agents.
Ari said that such agents should be women drawn from the grassroots to sustain their advocacy programmes to promote girl-child education, women empowerment and ending violence at the grassroots level. ....
